TABIONA, Utah — A teenage girl is dead and her father seriously injured after their SUV plunged into a hole on a northeastern Utah highway.

Authorities say heavy rainfall is being blamed for the collapse of State Road 35, which opened up a hole 40 feet wide and more than 30 feet deep. The collapse happened at about 2 a.m. Thursday near Tabiona, a mountain town about 80 miles east of Salt Lake City.

The road remains impassable, and an investigation is under way.

The Utah Highway Patrol says a Ford Excursion plunged into the gap, and the adult male driver was hospitalized in serious condition. His 15-year-old daughter died.

A female driver of another car that plunged into the hole also was hospitalized.

The patrol says it could take up to three days to repair the road. Meanwhile, traffic is being re-routed to U.S. Highway 40.
