HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida man was arrested Sunday for allegedly stealing an ambulance from a hospital.

Hernando County Sheriff’s Office officials said in a media release that Trey Cornwell, 29, allegedly took the Hernando County Fire & Emergency Services rig from the ambulance bay of Oak Hill Hospital while crewmembers were inside the hospital offloading a patient.

Cornwell allegedly drove the rig until it became stuck in some mud and sand near a body of water, at which point he reportedly exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. Witnesses saw Cornwell running to a nearby shopping plaza, according to sheriff’s office officials, and he was soon after apprehended and taken into custody.

Cornwell is charged with grand theft auto and is being held on a $10,000 bond, officials said.
