RICHMOND, Va. — Three people are in the hospital, two in critical condition, after a car crashed into the Chickahominy River during a police chase Monday night.
Police removed the car from the river near the Henrico and New Kent line after receiving a 911 call at 10:32 reporting an overturned vehicle in the water. Henrico ambulance crews then pulled two female passengers from the car, Henrico fire Capt. Daniel Rosenbaum said.
Rosenbaum said both women had no pulse when they were pulled from the vehicle. They were resuscitated while being transported to VCU Medical Center, Rosenbaum said, and both were listed in critical condition at the hospital today.
A dive team was called to look for the man driving the vehicle and he was found out of the water about a mile from the accident site shortly after 3 a.m., Rosenbaum said.
He appeared to be in good condition and was taken to the hospital for evaluation, Rosenbaum said.
Police Lt. T.A. Alvis this morning said the incident began at 9:57 p.m. when an officer stopped a vehicle being driven erratically on Williamsburg Road at Elko Road. The car sped off from the traffic stop location at a high rate of speed.
Alvis said officers were unable to catch up to the vehicle. A short time later, Alvis said, Henrico emergency communications operators received calls about a vehicle that was overturned and in the water at White Oak and Williamsburg roads.
Alvis said police determined it was the same vehicle that had fled from the traffic stop.
No charges have been filed in the incident, which Alvis said the police department’s crash team is investigating.
