WASHINGTON — DC Fire and EMS Firefighter-EMT Carl Braxton, 30, was fatally shot while off duty Monday in Charles County, Maryland. A neighbor who was walking a dog shot him, NBC Washington reported.
The 8-year veteran of DCFEMS had allegedly assaulted his girlfriend inside their home, according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office. His girlfriend, who is also a firefighter ran outside and found a neighbor who was walking his dog as Braxton followed her. Braxton threatened to hurt him and walked aggressively toward him, CBS News reported, when the neighbor shot him.
The man had a permit to carry a firearm and was later released by the police. He did not know Braxton prior to the incident.
Braxton and his girlfriend, who is also a firefighter, have two young sons together.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
DCFEMS expressed its sorrow for Braxton and his family in a post, stating that they “mourn the tragic and untimely loss of one of our own.” The post went on to say that the deparrtment is “deeply saddened by the loss” and that their “thoughts and prayers are with the Braxton family during this difficult time.”
