NEW YORK — A paramedic was named the new “Jeopardy!” champion.

During the May 6 episode, Paramedic Matthew Smith was named the victor following the final “Jeopardy!” round with “historic groups” as the category.

Weckiai Rannila, an engineer from New Mexico, was in the lead with $35,200 before competing against Smith and Carrie Klaus. Smith had $13,200 and Klaus had $10,600 going into the final round.

The winning clue stated, “Like their uniform, the flag of this group created in 1506 has stripes of red, blue & yellow, the colors of the Medici family.”

Smith was the only one to correctly answer “Swiss Guard,” doubling his total to $26,400 and securing the win from second place.
