Between first responders’ on-the-go lifestyle, shiftwork and nutritional fads, knowing what to eat to fuel a healthy responders’ body can be a challenge. Together, they discuss:

  • 3 nutrition guardrails
  • The place for sugar in your diet
  • Altering the food environment
  • Healthy grab-and-go snack options
  • The adding-in mindset
  • How to shift culture and avoid peer pressure

Dr. Jill Joyce is a registered dietitian who hates kale and loves chocolate. She is associate professor and co-director of the Tactical Fitness and Nutrition Lab at Oklahoma State University. She is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and after graduation, spent 9 years moving around the country with her husband for his active-duty Army service working in a variety of settings as a dietitian. As a researcher, she investigates how healthy tactical athletes (first responders and members of the military) eat, why they eat the way they do, and effective interventions to help them fuel properly for health and performance.

Megan Lautz is a registered dietitian and strength coach with a Master’s in Sports Nutrition. Megan’s mission is to help first responders perform better, recover faster and enjoy long, healthy retirements. Prior to joining Fairfax Fire and Police in 2021, Lautz worked with Montgomery County Fire and Police from 2017-2021. She has trained for and passed CPAT, completed 24-hour ride-alongs, and is heavily involved in fire recruit training and nutrition. She provides healthy dinner demonstrations, nutrition roundtable discussions, workouts and mobility sessions to career firefighters out in the field. Lautz is the owner of RescueRD, LLC, which provides nutrition seminars and coaching for first responders across the country.

Mandy Nice is Lexipol’s strategic wellness director. She has over 18 years of experience developing and implementing national award-winning physical fitness and wellness programs that measurably improve the health, strength, quality of life and resilience of first responders and civilians. Her work has been featured in highly esteemed industry publications including the International Association of Chiefs of Police Police Chief Magazine and the FBI National Academy Associate Magazine, and she has routinely served as a subject matter expert and professional speaker for industry-leading organizations, including the U.S. Bureau of Justice Assistance, the National Justice Clearinghouse, the National White Collar Crime Center, the National Fraternal Order of Police, the National Foundation Research Associates, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
