NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Lawmakers in Tennessee are considering a bill that would allow firefighters and EMS providers to carry guns while on duty.
WSMV reported that State Rep. Clay Doggett introduced HB 493, which would allow firefighters and EMS providers to carry a handgun on duty, “provided that the person has successfully completed … a firearm training program,” according to the bill.
Nashville Fire Union President Mark Young said firefighters and EMS providers often face dangerous patients.
“There are definitely times when you have a patient that could be a serious threat,” he said.
Doggett said on-scene safety has “been an overwhelming concern.”
“It’s an opportunity for a department head to say, ‘I want to provide this opportunity for our employees for an extra safety and security,’” he said.
Doggett said firearm training would be required every year, and it would be up to the department to decide what kind of training program the first responders undergo.
“Making sure if something like this is adopted that the proper training I think is key,” Young said.
