BOSTON — An MBTA bus collided with a green Dodge minivan yesterday evening, sending at least 15 people, including several children, to the hospital, emergency officials said.

The crash happened at the intersection of Morton Street and Gallivan Boulevard in Dorchester around 6:30 p.m., when the van attempted to cross Gallivan from Morton Street, said a woman who was inside the minivan.

“My sister stopped at the stop sign, and started to go and then saw the bus but it was too late,” said Kimberley Grant, 28, who was a passenger in the van. “There were three children in here, one had a broken leg.”

Grant leaped to the side of the children as Boston EMS crews pulled them out of an ambulance so they could be placed on stiff neck boards with back support.

Boston Fire Capt. Jonathan Rodriguez said, “Engine 16, which is housed about 100 yards from the crash, was first on scene and faced the daunting task of giving emergency aid to as many as 16 victims, many of them juveniles.”

“It’s a bad intersection,” said Rodriguez, who added that he has responded to numerous accidents at the same location.

Boston EMS said they transported a total of 13 patients to area hospitals, most with neck and back injuries, none of them were considered life threatening.

MBTA police were investigating the crash, which spun the van 180 degrees.
