SOUTH HUNTINGDON, Pa. — Eight people were taken to hospitals for injuries suffered in a two-vehicle accident last night in South Huntingdon.

Westmoreland County 911 said the accident took place shortly after 5:40 p.m. on Route 31.

Mark Penska, Turkeytown assistant fire chief, said a car carrying six people and a Jeep with two people were involved in the head-on collision. The people in the car apparently suffered more serious injuries and were taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, he said, and the two people in the Jeep were taken to Excela Westmoreland Hospital.

“There were bumps on the head, cuts here and there, nothing real life-threatening,” Penska said.

All were taken to the hospital by ambulance because helicopters could not fly because of the weather conditions.

Penska said weather did not appear to be a contributing factor in the crash.

“One of the people in the car said the brakes locked up,” he said.

The road was closed for nearly an hour.
