NEW YORK — Subway service on the 1 line was restored late Tuesday afternoon after a southbound train hit some debris on the track and caused a smoke condition in the 191st St. station in Manhattan, the Daily News has learned.

Fire officials said 18 people were injured, with 16 transported to area hospitals. The injured included two members of the train crew. Most of the injuries were believed to be related to smoke inhalation.

The incident caused a suspension of service for about four hours between Dyckman St. and 145th St.

Reports of a smoke condition came in to the FDNY at 12:50 p.m., and a Fire Department spokesman confirmed that firefighters and EMS were at the scene.

According to the MTA, a southbound 1 train hit debris on the track as it entered the191st St. station, knocking it into the third rail, which is electrified. That caused an electrical arc and created the smoke condition.

An MTA spokesperson had no additional details Tuesday afternoon.
