RIVER FALLS, Wis. — An off-duty Wisconsin firefighter-EMT was killed Friday while clearing the scene of a collision as part of a speedway safety crew.
River Falls Firefighter-EMT Eddie Nicholson, 62, died after a damaged bus rolled onto him in the aftermath of the crash at Cedar Lake Speedway, according to RiverTowns.net.
Nicholson was a second-generation firefighter and a more than 30-year veteran of the River Falls Fire Department, according to a statement from the department.
He was also an active member of River Falls EMS, the agency said in a statement.
In addition to his service at the fire and EMS departments and on the speedway safety crew, Nicholson worked driving tow trucks for Twin Cities Transport and Recovery.
Fire Chief Scott Nelson described Nicholson as the “unofficial leader” of the department, according to RiverTowns.net.
Nicholson was honored with a procession of emergency vehicles on Sunday morning.
