INDEPENDENCE, Iowa — One person is dead after he apparently became trapped in a grain dryer in rural Buchanan County on Wednesday.
A woman in the 1600 block of Nathen Bethel Avenue, northeast of Independence, called the sheriff’s office around 5 a.m. on Wednesday after she was unable to locate her husband at their home.
Surveillance video from the location showed him walking toward the grain dryer, according to the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff’s deputies and Winthrop firefighters conducted a brief search and found the man in the grain dryer. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
According to the initial investigation, it appears the male became trapped under corn in the dryer and was unable to free himself.
This incident remains under investigation.
The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office, Winthrop Fire Department, AMR Ambulance and Buchanan County Medical Examiner Investigator were involved in the response.
