‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ fans urged to avoid injury and entrapment

Emergency responders are expecting a spike in entrapment with the movie’s release; foreign body removal reports have significantly increased since book trilogy released in 2011

LONDON — The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has seen a rise in people becoming stuck or trapped in rings, potentially inspired by their reading of the “Fifty Shades of Grey” book trilogy.

Since April, the LFB has responded to 393 handcuff or ring entrapments, BBC reported.

“The Fifty Shades effect seems to spike handcuff incidents so we hope film-goers will use common sense and avoid leaving themselves red-faced,” said LFB spokesperson Dave Brown.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission data shows a sharp increase in sex toy injuries after the 2012 and 2013 release of the Fifty Shades of Grey series, reported the Washington Post.

Most of the sex toy injuries, 83 percent, are foreign body removals. The data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) shows most injuries are not severe. Though 25 percent of injuries require hospitalization or transfer to a different facility.

Interested clinicians can query the NEISS using the product code ‘1610 – massage devices or vibrators’ to review submitted patient cases.
