1. Where did your company name originate from?
Upon returning home from World War II, our founder, Theodore Ziaylek Sr., opened a small machine shop in Yardley, Pa. There, he invented a drill press that automatically advanced the material and named it the “Ziamatic.”
The “Zico” name is a quick and easy combination of Ziamatic and Corporation.
2. What was the inspiration behind starting your company?
Our founder was a member of the local volunteer fire department and was occasionally asked to use his machine shop to create custom equipment brackets for the trucks. Other departments saw these brackets and asked for some of their own. The business grew from there.
3. What is your signature product and how does it work?
We are best known for our SCBA brackets, wheel chocs, tool mounts and ladder/portable tank-lowering systems.
4. Why do you believe your products are essential to the firefighting community?
Each product serves a purpose. Sometimes that’s increasing safety on the fire scene. Sometimes it’s to shave time off of a task or make a task easier to accomplish. Sometimes it’s just to keep a tool organized and protected until the moment it’s needed. Our products help departments protect their personnel and get the full value out of their equipment, plain and simple.
5. What makes your company unique?
Safety is paramount in everything we design. Sometimes that means keeping a piece of equipment from shifting or falling, other times it means minimizing dangerous climbing on wet surfaces. And sometimes it’s simply doing the heavy lifting for them to protect their knees and backs. And once we have a design, we go above and beyond to third party test and make sure our products will do what we say they’ll do. Others don’t do that.
6. What do your customers like best about you and your products?
Emergency Services is what we do. They know that we stand behind our products — that we put our heart and soul into each one. We offer high-quality engineering backed by thorough field testing. So when they see our name on the side they know that when push comes to shove, they can count on our products to perform. And we’ve been told that it’s nice to have that peace of mind.
7. What is the most rewarding part of serving the first responder community?
We’re proud to support these men and women putting themselves at risk each day for the sake of others. Knowing that we help make their jobs a little bit safer and a little bit easier each day is its own reward.
8. What’s next for your company? Any upcoming new projects or initiatives?
