If you’ve only ever operated a chainsaw, in the line of duty; or for cleaning up storm debris, a backyard task or home improvement project, you know it can be a little overwhelming from a safety perspective.
This is why it’s important to know your tool inside out, including all of the built-in safety features, and to have the appropriate safety gear.
Chainsaw safety gear is important, regardless of whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned firefighter – or arborist. Following are some recommended products to stay safe while operating a chainsaw.

Next, we have top-of-the-line hearing protection with Walker’s Razor Slim earmuffs. Designed to protect your hearing from loud noises while also amplifying ambient sound, these provide protection for any loud tasks where you still need to listen to other people or sounds.
Easy to control, with a side volume switch and a very comfortable headband, these earmuffs are great for operating any heavy machinery (such as a chainsaw) or at the range. Priced at $43 on Amazon, these are a great find.
Ironclad EXO Motor Impact Gloves
I always recommend hand protection as well for operating heavy machinery. I personally use the Ironclad EXO motor impact gloves. They do a great job of keeping your hands safe, with designated impact padding and a sweat-resistant interior, and they are quick and easy to put on.
Working for an EMS agency that cross-staffs fire apparatus, these are a must for me, even when I’m not using tools. As first responders, our hands are constantly exposed to hazards, pathogens and other nastiness. The last thing we need is a cut on our hands to increase our risk of infection. These gloves are affordable at $17 and I would absolutely recommend them.

First aid and trauma supplies
Finally, though we hope to never have the need, you always want to have access to emergency supplies when operating heavy machinery. When it comes to power tools, I’m talking about tourniquets, dressing and gauze. A simple first aid kit with even just these three items would go a long way.
If you want to be extra prepared, you can add alcohol swabs, Band-Aids, sterile water and peroxide/iodine. There are tons of things you can put in a first aid kit, but I would highly emphasize a tourniquet, as this is often a lifesaving tool when it comes to power tool injuries. For $15, you can get a two-pack of combat tourniquets on Amazon, and they are super easy to use and well worth the money.
There you have it – if you’re using a chainsaw or other power tools, or know someone that uses them regularly, it’s always a good idea to make sure there is access to all the safety gear you need – at a minimum, eye and hearing protection, hand protection and a first aid kit with a tourniquet for emergencies.
