If you’re thinking about becoming an emergency medical technician (EMT), you probably have a lot of questions about where to start. From finding a class near you to understanding what it costs, how long it takes and what you’ll need, preparing for EMT training involves more than just signing up.

Whether you’re wondering if you can take classes online, need to wear a uniform or what books and equipment to buy, this article will walk you through everything you need to know to get started on your path to EMT certification.

How do I find EMT classes near me?

You can find EMT classes near you by searching online for local community colleges, technical schools or fire departments that offer emergency medical services (EMS) training. You can also check with your state’s EMS office or use the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) website to find accredited EMT programs in your area.

How long are EMT classes?

EMT classes typically take about three to six months to complete, depending on the program and whether you attend full-time or part-time. Some accelerated programs can be finished in as little as eight to 10 weeks, while others may stretch longer if taken on weekends or evenings.

How much does an EMT class cost?

The cost of EMT classes varies, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $800 to $2,000 for tuition, depending on the provider and location. Additional costs like textbooks, uniforms and certification fees may also apply, so it’s a good idea to ask for a breakdown of all expenses when researching programs.

Do I need a uniform for EMT class?

Most EMT programs do require students to wear a uniform, especially during clinical and ride-along portions of the training. Uniform requirements usually include navy or black pants, a program-issued shirt or polo and sometimes boots or safety gear.

Can I get an EMT certification online?

While some parts of EMT training, like lectures and assignments, can be completed online, hands-on skills training and clinical experience must be done in person. Therefore, a fully online EMT certification is not possible, but hybrid EMT schools that combine online coursework with in-person labs are available.

What books or equipment do I need for EMT class?

Most EMT classes require a textbook, such as Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). There are also a range of test prep books that can help you prepare to pass your certification including:

You may also need items like a stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, trauma shears, penlight and a uniform. Your program will provide a list of required materials when you enroll.
