In this episode of Inside EMS, co-hosts Chris Cebollero and Kelly Grayson discuss the opportunity EMS leaders have to shape discussions related to the Wuhan coronavirus, as EMS1 Editor-in-Chief Greg Friese wrote in his recent article, “Why EMS leaders need to discuss the Wuhan coronavirus with the public, media.”
Grayson kicks off the episode by describing the panic around the virus, saying, “I think it’s much ado about nothing,” and explains the media hype has helped to spread fear.
Meanwhile, Cebollero believes this is a great opportunity for EMS leaders to get in front of the media and provide information about other public health concerns, such as influenza, and how to stay healthy. He proposes agencies send EMS providers to community functions to give presentations, touching on best practices for keeping germs away, what symptoms to look out for, and when to call 911. This type of proactive education makes the community aware of what to do and how first responders can keep them safe.
