SC EMS crews require special equipment to load obese patients

Bariatric stretchers, ambulance operations more common

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Paramedics rely on training to build their knowledge and skills, but they use equipment to get patients where they need to go.

That equipment is growing, in response to an increasing number of patients who are severely obese.

Spartanburg EMS paramedic Crystal Dobbins said a 621-pound man transported last Monday was the largest person she’s helped in 21 years.
