In this week’s Inside EMS quick clip, hosts Chris Cebollero and Kelly Grayson discuss an Ohio EMS station that was ransacked, with thieves making off with EMS uniforms and ID cards while crews were stationed at a Halloween block party.
“While I wouldn’t go so far as to say this was part of a larger plot … it does highlight the risks and dangers that are out there,” Grayson said. “This is the kind of thing where terrorism rears its ugly head.”
ID cards are often magnetically coded and allow for access to secure areas of hospitals, and the uniforms make it possible to impersonate a public safety official. Grayson suggests better security at ambulance stations so such important items are not so easily obtained.
Cebollero agreed, saying providers seem to be getting complacent by doing things like leaving the keys in the ignition with the ambulance running, and need to start putting more thought into keeping equipment safe.
“We don’t know where the next big thing is going to happen,” Cebollero said.
