SC EMS agency employees lose health care benefits

Of the 551 Beaufort County employees affected, some quit; others are demoralized by the decision

BEAUFORT, S.C. — Imagine working for decades in one place, only to have the healthcare benefits you signed-on for, revoked. That’s a reality for all Beaufort County employees; from sheriff’s deputies to EMS employees, there will be no more retired healthcare benefits. Beaufort County Council made the decision some call ‘dangerous’ in March. NEWS 3 spoke with a former EMS employee, and a current EMS employee, who are devastated about losing the benefit they counted on. They believe the consequence of this decision can mean a hindrance to their work, even impacting the people they serve.

Jon Bruner is one who worked as a paramedic for more than a decade for Beaufort County. He quit his job once he learned of the cut to benefits.

“Be aware that there is a service that is rarely talked about, and often overlooked,” Bruner warns citizens and Beaufort County Council.
