Street where toddler struck by ambulance has history of incidents

Residents and pedestrians said city officials should consider widening the sidewalks and restricting access to emergency vehicles

BOSTON — At least nine other collisions have occurred since 2010 on the same narrow street where a toddler was hit and killed by an ambulance Saturday.

The Boston Globe reported that 2-year-old Isabella Wu, her mother and older sister were returning to their apartment across from the ambulance entrance near Tufts Medical Center when an EasCare ambulance hit the girl. Wu died at the hospital.

None of the other collisions since 2010 were fatal, but six cases involved parked vehicles. One involved a pedestrian who received minor injuries and another involved a bicycle striking a vehicle. Ambulances were involved in two incidents that resulted in property damage.

Residents and pedestrians are now speaking out about getting wider sidewalks and restrictions on vehicular and foot traffic.

“It’s dangerous,” resident John Fay said. “You have nowhere to walk. If you’re a family of three or four you don’t have any room.”

Mayor Martin J. Walsh expressed his condolences Monday and said he is committed to “creating safe streets,” according to the report.

A crash reconstruction is still underway and should provide evidence if speed was a contributing factor to Wu’s death.
