LAFLIN, Pa. — The elderly patient being transported by an ambulance that was hit by a suspected intoxicated driver last week has died.

Margaret Josephine Milewski, 87, of Pittston, died Monday evening in Susquehanna County, according to a pending obituary notice submitted Tuesday.

Luzerne County First Assistant District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce confirmed the death, and said Milewski is scheduled for an autopsy this week to determine the cause of death. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death is ongoing, he said.

Milewski was injured last Thursday when the Greater Pittston Regional Ambulance that was taking her to a hospital was struck head-on by a car that crossed the center lines of state Route 315 just south of the intersection in front of the Oblates of St. Joseph Seminary.

Two ambulance association personnel, paramedic Emmett Thomas, 50, of Kingston, and driver Michael Ankenband, 34, of Shavertown, were treated and released from the hospital after the crash.

Troopers say the driver of the 2007 Toyota Sienna that caused the crash, Lawrence Vanburen-Morgan, of Nanticoke, is suspected of driving under the influence.

No charges had been filed as of Tuesday.
