SANDY CREEK, N.Y. — A doctor from Maryland and three ambulance workers from northern New York are dead after two cars slammed into a milk tanker truck that had swerved to avoid deer and jackknifed on a New York highway, police said Thursday.
The jackknifed Western Star milk tanker driven by 38-year-old Charles Howard III, of Watertown, blocked both northbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Oswego County late Wednesday night. Two cars skidded under it, killing all occupants.
Three men from northern New York died in one car, a 2002 Mercury Sable. They’re identified as 50-year-old Corey Moore, of Canton, 58-year-old Gregg Williams, of De Kalb Junction, and 63-year-old Roderick Cota, of Norwood. All were employees of R.B. Lawrence Ambulance in Canton.
The ambulance company’s owner, R.B. Lawrence, said Williams and Cota had been returning from taking a patient to a Syracuse hospital when their ambulance broke down and Moore went to get them in the Mercury.
The victim in the other car, a 2011 Subaru, was identified as 52-year-old Moon John Kim, of Ellicott City, Maryland. Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown issued a statement saying Dr. Kim had been a member of the radiology staff there since 2011.
Troopers said the truck driver wasn’t hurt.
The accident in Sandy Creek forced the closure of the four-lane highway for about seven hours.
