ATLANTIC COUNTY, N.J. — A child was airlifted after a boat carrying multiple passengers ran aground Sunday on a river in Atlantic County, officials said.

The incident occurred on the South River adjacent to Estell Manor Park, according to a county spokeswoman.

The vessel, operated by Daniel J. Bollinger, 37, of Egg Harbor City, ran aground into a marsh area and struck several trees, according to a New Jersey State Police spokesman.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene shortly after 5:30 p.m.

Four people on the 18-foot boat were taken to hospitals for treatment, Dorothy Volunteer Fire Company Chief Jess Hand confirmed Monday, and one of those, a young child, was airlifted for treatment.

All injuries were described as non-life threatening, according to police.

Bollinger allegedly ran from the scene before troopers arrived, the police spokesman said, but he later came to the Buena Vista state police barracks.

He was charged with third-degree knowingly leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury and assault by auto, police said.

Court records did not list an attorney for Bollinger as of Monday afternoon.

A photo posted on the Dorothy fire company’s social media page showed the vessel a considerable distance from the river.

In addition to Dorothy, several other fire and rescue units assisted on the rescue call, including Buena Vista Township EMS, Hamilton Township EMS, Richland Fire, Estell Manor Fire, AtlantiCare medic units and Atlantic County park rangers.
