JACKSON, Miss. — A Mississippi paramedic who was severely injured six years ago after being struck by a car while helping a patient has died.

Hesselbein was aiding a 71-year-old patient who had been struck by a car when another car veered and struck both of them.

The patient, Jessie Lee Thomas, was killed in the crash. Hesselbein was struck on her left side; her left leg was amputated, and she also lost her left eye.

Hesselbein spent several months hospitalized and underwent more than two dozen operations after the crash.

Robert Lee Howard Jr., the driver of the car that struck Hesselbein and Thomas, pleaded guilty to drunk driving charges in 2015 and was given a 25-year prison sentence. His sentence was suspended due to medical reasons.
